‘At the heart of my painting is the expression of human life, and portraiture has always been a part of that.’
Juliet Wood’s interest in portrait and figure painting started at the Arts Educational Schools where drawing and painting were imaginatively taught alongside dance training. In 1997 she was asked to paint a family group for a film in the BBC Everyman series. Since then she has established a reputation for her searching and sensitive portraits. About two hundred people from all walks of life have sat to Juliet; from peers, academics, scientists and writers, to children and intimate family groups, and portraits commissioned as gifts from one spouse to another. Shown here are Juliet’s grandson, and her brother and sister in law.
Besides individual portraits and intimate head studies, Juliet’s love of drawing and the interrelation of figures in space leads her to paint complex groups and conversation pieces.
Juliet’s portraits are in many public and private collections, including the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Scottish National Gallery. She has exhibited at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the new Grafton Gallery Portrait Centre whose commissions led to portraits all over Britain, some of the most interesting in Scotland.
